Politically Confused

Me The People

Party of “me” vs. party of “we”

No, it’s not a typo. The “m” and the “w” are far enough apart on the keyboard so even a bad typist like myself would not type “me” instead of “we”.

I have concluded that today’s Conservatives are so indoctrinated into the rights of the individual above all other considerations that their mindset has become, “Me The People”. This is the nicest way I could say: “I got mine, screw you”.

Every other political persuasion has policies that deal with society as a group of individuals. Regardless of whether they are Democrats, Greens, Socialists, or even Libertarians, first and foremost in their policies is “We The People”.

We are all in this together, except for the extreme right-wing Conservatives. They’re in it individually. They are today’s frontiersmen. They don’t need or want help from anyone – not their neighbors or the government.

Now, fast-forward to Tallahassee (I live in Florida). You have these rugged individuals in almost every elected office in the Florida state government – it is overwhelmingly Republican. They are so busy thumbing their nose at everyone else in the room because they represent the government they despise that they lose sight of the fact that they are all members of the same political party, there specifically to govern the state. It isn’t easy to compromise and reach a consensus when you are the only one that matters.

The Republican Party leadership is incredibly incompetent. I am unsure if they could organize a solitaire game and get everyone to agree on the rules. They are so incompetent that they could easily qualify for a promotion to Washington. They are the government that they hate and are doing everything possible to destroy the entire institution.

But, every cloud has a silver lining. They, the Republicans, have proved to the entire world that they are incapable of governing at any level. Worse yet, they aren’t even interested in governing. Here’s a quick quiz. What’s more important, passing a budget for the 3rd biggest state in the country, or cutting the ribbon at a Wawa store? This is the party that shut down the federal government and will shut down Florida’s if they can’t pass a budget by June 30th. Good luck with that since the session has ended and the individuals have dispersed like so many drops of oil in the Gulf of Mexico.

If they don’t get what they want, they simply go home. Remember that the head of the Republican Party was one of the deserters. They sort of remind me of the rich kid who would take his football and go home if he didn’t win. It is time for the State of Florida, and the rest of the country, to return the responsibility of governing to the party capable and willing to govern – the Democrats.
